Starting point and objective
Projects are the supreme discipline of systemic organizational considerations in companies. That’s only natural. To do this, you have to know and understand what projects are.
In many organizations it can be observed that it is not at all clear what classic “line tasks” are and what a project is. This difference often decides whether a project is successful or not. And then often nobody is behind it. In the case of the idea, yes, when it comes to planning, approval, implementation and troubleshooting … then again it was nobody, and everyone is busy hiding behind the activities of “normal everyday work”. So if you do not master management as a manager in the line organization, where there are clear superiors / subordination, sanctions that you can use and clear established processes that provide structure, you will not be successful in project management. Because here one sets a project organization over the so-called “rule organization” (line organization) over the hierarchies, where innovation, team spirit, professionalism, resource awareness, etc. is demanded of the project employees. That sounds almost “virtual” – the reality can be recognized by the mountain of costs and the waste of resources in failed projects.
That you can learn project management as a craft and leadership as an attitude is self-explanatory. That it takes practice and a little intuition, but above all good planning and a lot of discipline is also clear. And then you can often avoid them, the classic mistakes such as:
- Something is made into the project that is not a project
- There is no clear client who stands behind the project
- No capable project team is put together
- no resources (time, money, employees, etc.) are made available
- There is no clear start, no realistic end, too little buffer, no capacities, no planning, no monitoring, …
- There is no realistic schedule, no milestones, no exit scenarios …
- No clear benefit for the project team and the organization is communicated at the start of the project / “kick-off”
- There is a lack of project management skills (leadership experience, processes, tools, etc.)
- It is not being followed up
- Nobody works goal-oriented
- There are conflicts that are ignored and dealt with
